This week's question is one that I didn't even know needed to be asked until i got the answer. I met with magician Public Relations expert, Lisa Elia of www.ClearPublicist.com. She is really a gem.
During the course of our conversation, she mentioned that many people don't know what PR is, really. I discovered that I, too, was in the majority by thinking PR is simply press releases and interfacing with the press. Wrong.
So this week's question is:
What is PR anyway?
Thanks to Lisa, I now know the answer.
According to Lisa, PR is all encounters you have with the public. It truly is called Public Relations for a reason. She clarified that it includes how you answer the phone, what your machine message says, how you dress at events and when meeting with clients, and pretty much how you appear in public at all times, especially if you are a solopreneur and your brand is you.
How would this change your thoughts about how you interact with the world, knowing that you are always doing your own PR, whether you know it or not. In these times when twitter and a single tweet can pass to thousands of people instantly, you'd better be nice to your waiter and anyone else you encounter. it only serves you and your image to treat others well.
And consciousness around your interactions with the world, even if you're just answering the door, will give you a huge leg up on those who think it's just about press releases.
If you ask yourself the question, "How does this choice impact my business?" whenever you relate to the world, you are starting to think with a savvy sense of PR.
For further guidance on the topic, be sure to consult Lisa. She's gotten clients on Oprah, for heaven's sake! Why not build your business to that level of success, too?
