look how full our goody bags got at blogher 07! it was like christmas, except we had to haul all the stuff around all day....
i arrived home last night after five days of travel and excitement. it's funny to me how extreme my reactions are in terms of seeking out new stimulation. i work at home most of the time and am in a sort of self-determined isolation chamber all day and then get out in the evenings or to yoga class or to see friends and do a varied, but familiar assortment of fun activities. i begin to crave a breaking out of this routine and desire something more. milda and i headed out to meet a whole new community this past weekend of others who, for reasons we can't often explain, sit for hours trying to understand ourselves and each other through the computer. i sucked up every little bit of information i could in the time i was there, including meeting and connecting with hundreds of women and a few brave men attendees. i had a lovely come-down with friends from college for a night and now am dropped back into my life. what does one do with all this new fullness and information? how does it fit into the life i was building before?

blogher 07 wrapped up today and i must say that despite my exhaustion, i have enough new information, connection to amazing bloggers, ideas and juice to keep me going for years and years. i was able to make contact with so many inspiring people with great ideas and was so excited to build my network with them. so why did my site forwarding have to implode today?

i am here! i first heard about the blogher conference just weeks after it happened last year as i was starting this site. i was determined not to miss it again. milda and i made the trek from l.a. to chicago and have been so glad we did. this is the largest blogging conference in the world at this point- for women or anyone else. it is an amazing community and in just one day i have learned enough to fuel me for another year. check out our rad dining room above. here are the highlights of day 1...

my brother and i used to roar with laughter at will ferrill's impersonation of james lipton from inside the actor's studio, especially when he referred to people as "a delight." how could anyone be a delight, we wondered. shanna murray is making me eat my words.
i was very fortunate a week ago to the day to be able to have the first of what i hope are many phone chats about art, fabric vs. knitting, the madness of technology, cleaning letterpresses, and how love can keep you in upstate new york.

If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the
thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the
power to revoke at any moment.

i am a member of zaadz, a wonderful online community that promotes conscious capitalism through mindful business. one of the great features is the ability to subscribe to newsletters of inspirational quotations. the one above arrived this morning, and i found it particularly salient.

most of you who know me well know how much i love a murder show. especially a bbc one. i even love their silly sound work. but if you think about it, "prime suspect" is much more than just a whodunit show; it's an amazing example of a strong woman trying to succeed and navigate through a solidly male-centered field. as i watch her tear it up in the station and solve crime after crime, i am inspired to continue to promote and solve the little mysteries of starting my own business. read on for more of why helen is the best...
my current season.... it's the best.

as i have been officially "working from home" and largely for myself these last few months, i have compiled a top ten list to commemorate this unique and sometimes strange adventure. do you recognize yourself in any of these moments?

strange to celebrate a day commemorating our country, one that i respect in many ways for the permissions we have- at least we assume we still have- but am extremely ambivalent about in other ways, especially now. but i do think about what it means to be independent quite a lot, so i thought i would share those thoughts, rather than go on yet another political diatribe that is likely to clog the web today. i will leave that to those who read the ny times far more religiously than i, and will make more salient points than i could.
