i had a nice treat this weekend- a message from my writing teacher sharing her survival list for her day job, at the cheese shop she works in to fund her wonderful writing. i liked it so much i asked her to let me shre it with all of you.
thank you edan!
here is her message:
"I enjoyed your recent post about how to maintain sanity in the
working world. You inspired me to email you my own creative goals, as
you call them:
1. Set aside one day that does not include any working. For me,
this means only reading for pleasure (instead of reading for teaching),
not writing, not hefting wheels of cheese, and not tutoring. Right now
I don't have a day like this, but I plan on setting Sunday aside for
fun, exploration, eating, resting, talking, catching up with friends,
going outside. A big breakfast, a late morning expedition to the
Hollywood Farmer's Market, perhaps a hike or walk in the hills, coffee
with a friend. Just some time to let me mind rest, for the big plans
to come.
2. When at work, daydream about writing. This can be thinking about a character's shoes, to considering a structural question.
3. Write down new ideas, even when in public. Scribble about works in progress in journal, too, to get ideas out.
4. Keep writing, even if it just means sitting at the desk, staring."
please do send more, everyone. i love edan's daydreaming idea a lot and i plan to try it out tomorrow. i will report back on how it goes...
