Bernard, our otter mascott, was tired after a full day of packing up that didn't allow us to leave until about 5pm on day one. It turns out Bernard has a lot of stuff.
The bar was low on day one as we decided we at least needed to leave Baltimore as that would allow us to feel we had left. We checked the map for the next major destination southwest of Baltimore: D.C. As Ian has not seen much of the east and never any monuments or other lovelies that i was dragged to on numerous school outings, we opted for the safe first campsite: our friends Kate, Alex, and Gina's backyard. True, it wasn't the most ambitious choice, but it did mean the certainty of remabulous company within the first 24 hours.
It turned out to be more of a camping adventure than we anticipated: the yard and tent worked out well, except for some vigorous root structure that give Ian added lumbar support. I slept fine, but am spoiled with a slightly inflated pad. we might need to get another one... Showering was the second adventurer endeavor- a faulty pilot light meant no hot water, which i enjoyed at night after a slimy day of travel and the promise of sleeping through a humid night in a tent. The next morning, however, even though i had adjusted to the temperature and Ian managed to keep his screams under control as he encountered the actual full-on cold shower, the water leaked down into the stairwell of the house due to a leaky pipe. yikes. the only thing that got soaked through was my bag, though, so even though i look like a hobo with my stuff in a plastic bag, at least my friends were kind enough to make it a whole foods bag. so we're classy organic hobos.
we did manage to eat lovely healthy food in DC. dinner (on Kate- thank you! you're naughty not to let us pay) at mark's kitchen was delicious. i had a tofu club and Ian had the first of many (i suspect) tuna melts. the next day at the savory brought yummy veggie bean burrito and rice for me and a tuna melt for Ian.
here's our first meal without friends along at the savory:
so- as we head for the monuments the count is:
tuna melts: 2 incidents: 1 (flood) states: 1 (still technically in maryland)
thanks to my brother who called and, upon discovering how far we had gotten, placed our eta at november and pointed out that it is 3,000 miles across, not 300.
remabulous means setting your own pace. thanks for checking in.
