this past saturday, ian and i ventured out the the magazine launch party of craft: a new magazine by the people who brought you "make", another fun little read. we got to peruse the new issue, take a copy home, eat free pizza and cupcakes and both see and speak to boingboing co-founder and "make" editor-in-chief mark frauenfelder. it was a big day.
sometimes we need a little divine inspiration. i got some ten days ago at grace cathedral. in the big break from posting here, i have been visiting- and mourning- san francisco, interviewed fabulous ladies, had some time with my muse patrol and gotten nude with paint in san diego. i will share all in upcoming posts.
i was talking with my brother tim today about whether or not i was still planning to pursue an mfa degree in photography. when we started talking about why i would do it, i realized that what i missed most were the group critiques. anyone in l.a. missing dialogue about ongoing art? let's start a think tank!
"having a boss is such an ugly idea," letts, lead singer of the band written house, tells me over coffee at insomnia on beverly blvd. due to ingenuity, dedication and good connections he's managed to avoid said ugliness for most of his life. i knew i wanted to interview letts, who is also good friends with my brother, because every time i heard about him he was always doing something both off-the-wall and totally different than what i had heard about before. i was lucky enough to get two interviews out of this meeting as his girlfriend, jan alquist,-just back from england the night before- joined us despite jet lag. i learned much about what the process of making it has meant for both of them.
let bernard put up a post; write anything at all ten days after arriving in la; fly back east and get the cats; completely unpack; mail postcards from the trip; not get lost; see all my friends i know in los angeles; put my website up for photography; successfully assemble an ikea organizing tower; interview an artist and review a live show; get any work done at all; get a massage.
out of all of these things i planned to do in the first ten days of living in los angeles, only one of them got done. the cats have now flown west.
